Hackable Homes

Is your house vulnerable?  Imagine coming home, disarming the alarm system, unlocking your doors and walking into a ransacked dwelling.  There are no broken windows, no forced entry, no compromised doggie doors and really no indication that an intruder had entered.  Welcome to your connected home.  I stop short of calling it a 'smart' home since it's not yet intelligent enough to keep the bad guys out.  From smartphone controlled front door locks to electrical outlets to security cameras to ovens, refrigerators and coffee machines, internet connected household objects are making their way into our homes.  Our TVs, DVDs and DVRs are already.  And anything connected to the internet, as we all know, is a potential target to be compromised.

Researchers have shown how easy it is to infect automobiles and it is only a matter of time before crooks and a little bit of code will be able to watch you leave your driveway, disable your alarms, unlock your door, steal your valuables and get out with minimal trace.  Those CSI/NCIS/Criminal Minds/L&O crime dramas will need to come up with some new ideas on how to solve the mystery during the trace-evidence musical montages.  The hard-nosed old timer is baffled by the fact that there is nothing to indicate a break-in except for missing items.  Is the victim lying for insurance fraud?  Could it have been a family member?  Or simply a raccoon?  A real who-done-it!  Until, of course, the geeky lab technician emerges from their lair with a laptop showing how the hacker remotely controlled the entire event.  'Look Boss, zeros and ones!'

Many of these remotely controlled home devices use a wireless communications protocol called Z-Wave.  It's a low power radio wave that allows home devices to communicate with each other and be controlled remotely over the internet.  Last year, 1.5 million home automation products were sold in the US and that is expected to grow to 8 million in less than 5 years.  An estimated 5 million Z-Wave devices will be shipped this year. 

Like any communications protocol, riff-raff will attempt to break it, intercept it and maliciously control it.  And as the rush to get these connected devices in consumer's hands and homes grows, security protections may lag.  I often convey that the hacks of the future just might involve your refrigerator.  Someone takes out all the internet enabled fridges on the West Coast and there is a food spoilage surge since no one owns legacy fridges any more....let alone Styrofoam coolers.

Targets of Opportunity

...Is one of the findings in #Verizon's 2013 Data Breach Investigations Report, which is chuck full of interesting data.  75% of the attack victims were selected because they had a weakness that an attacker knew how to exploit rather than being specifically chosen.  The difficulty of the initial compromise was low for 68% of the breaches meaning the attackers used basic methods or automated tools and scripts.  It also means that there are sloppy configurations, needless services and exposed vulnerabilities that are bringing this attention.

Overall, the report covers 47,000 reported security incidents, of which, there were 621 confirmed data breaches.  This is important since they focus on the 621 confirmed data loss incidents rather than the 47,000 reports.  There will probably be a ton of articles reporting the results but a good place to start is securosis.com with their How to Use the 2013 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report.  This is a great primer for the document.

There is a pretty even distribution of industries hit from financial to retail and restaurants to manufacturing, transportation and utilities to government and defense contractors.  The overwhelming majority of attacks are perpetrated by outsiders at 92% of the confirmed data breaches with insiders at 14%.  Interestingly, for all reports (the 47,000 not just the 621 confirmed) insiders accounted for 69% of the incidents.  Typically this was due to carelessness rather than criminal misuse.  76% of the network intrusions exploited weak or stolen credentials and most often, the attack was driven by financial motives at 75%.

Some other interesting data for me was that 66% of the breaches remained undiscovered for months or more and 69% of those were discovered by outside entities.  So organizations are in the dark about their intrusions, and it takes an outsider to point it out.  It's like those people who drive away with the gas hose still hooked to their tank. 

I was also curious about breaches as a result of BYOD.  Not many.  In 2011 they only saw 1 breach that involved personally owned devices and only a couple more in 2012.  They will keep watching and do expect that it may increase but for now, so far so good.  Could be because while BYOD is a hot topic, most surveys indicate that only around half the organizations are digging in.

There is a ton more valuable data in the report and it is an easy, fun read for 63 pages of stats.  Right on page 2 they say, 'Some organizations will be a target regardless of what they do, but most become a target because of what they do.  If your organization is indeed a target of choice, understand as much as you can about what your opponent is likely to do and how far they are willing to go.'  Put it on your list.

From Car Jacking to Car Hacking

With the promise of self-driving cars just around the corner of the next decade and with researchers already able to remotely apply the brakes and listen to conversations, a new security threat vector is emerging.  Computers in cars have been around for a while and today with as many as 50 microprocessors, it controls engine emissions, fuel injectors, spark plugs, anti-lock brakes, cruise control, idle speed, air bags and more recently, navigation systems, satellite radio, climate control, keyless entry, and much more. 

In 2010, a former employee of Texas Auto Center hacked into the dealer’s computer system and remotely activated the vehicle-immobilization system which engaged the horn and disabled the ignition system of around 100 cars.  In many cases, the only way to stop the horns (going off in the middle of the night) was to disconnect the battery.  Initially, the organization dismissed it as a mechanical failure but when they started getting calls from customers, they knew something was wrong.  This particular web based system was used to get the attention of those who were late on payments but obviously, it was used for something completely different.  After a quick investigation, police were able to arrest the man and charge him with unauthorized use of a computer system.

University of California - San Diego researchers, in 2011, published a report (pdf) identifying numerous attack vectors like CD radios, Bluetooth (we already knew that) and cellular radio as potential targets.  In addition, there are concerns that, in theory, a malicious individual could disable the vehicle or re-route GPS signals putting transportation (fleet, delivery, rental, law enforcement) employees and customers at risk.  Many of these electronic control units (ECUs) can connect to each other and the internet and so they are vulnerable to the same internet dangers like malware, trojans and even DoS attacks.  Those with physical access to your vehicle like mechanics, valets or others can access the On-Board Diagnostic System (OBD-II) usually located right under the dash.  Plug in, and upload your favorite car virus.  Tests have shown that if you can infect the diagnostics tools at a dealership, when cars were connected to the system, they were also infected.  Once infected, the car would contact the researcher’s servers asking for more instructions.  At that point, they could activate the brakes, disable the car and even listen to conversations in the car.  Imagine driving down a highway, hearing a voice over the speakers and then someone remotely explodes your airbags.  They’ve also been able to insert a CD with a malicious file to compromise a radio vulnerability.

Most experts agree that right now, it is not something to overly worry about since many of the previously compromised systems are after-market equipment, it  takes a lot of time/money and car manufactures are already looking into protection mechanisms.  But as I’m thinking about current trends like BYOD, it is not far fetched to imagine a time when your car is VPN’d to the corporate network and you are able to access sensitive info right from the navigation/entertainment/climate control/etc screen.  Many new cars today have USB ports that recognize your mobile device as an AUX and allow you to talk, play music and other mobile activities right through the car’s system.  I’m sure within the next 5 years (or sooner), someone will distribute a malicious mobile app that will infect the vehicle as soon as you connect the USB. 

Suddenly, buying that ‘84 rust bucket of a Corvette that my neighbor is selling doesn’t seem like that bad of an idea even with all the C4 issues.

Security’s Rough Ride

I know I’ve said this before but it sure seems like almost daily there is a security breach somewhere.  Over the years, the thought process has changed from prevent all attacks to, it is inevitable that we will be breached.  The massive number of attacks occurring daily makes it a statistical reality.  Now organizations are looking for the right solution (both technology and practice) to quickly detect a breach, stop it, identify what occurred and what data may have been compromised.  Over the last couple of days various entities have had their security breached.

As you are probably already aware either due to the headlines or a direct note in your email inbox, Zappos, a popular online shoe site, was compromised exposing information on 24 million customers.  While a good bit of info was taken, like usernames, passwords, addresses, email and other identifiable information, Zappos claims that the stored credit card information was apparently spared due to being encrypted.  There are still many details that are unknown like how it occurred and how long it had been exposed but all users are being required to change their passwords immediately.  Users might also want to change similar passwords on other websites since I’m sure the criminals are already trying those stolen passwords around the web.  These days it's entirely too easy to use information from one hack in many others.  It doesn't even matter if passwords were compromised.  Your can change your password, but the make and model of your first car, and your mother's maiden name can't be changed.  Yet, online service providers continue to rely on these relatively weak forms of secondary authentication.  The interesting thing is Zappos is/was apparently PCI-DSS compliant, proving once again, PCI compliance is a first step, not the goal.  Being PCI compliance does not mean that one is secure and this also underscores importance of using WAF like BIG-IP ASM.  And if it was not a web app that was owned on the server in Kentucky, then Section 6.6 is irrelevant.  But again, all the details are still to be uncovered and as far as I know, no-one has claimed responsibility.

Overseas, there is an ongoing cyber-war between a Saudi (reported) hacker and Israel.  0xOmar, as news articles have identified him, claims to have posted details of 400,000 Israeli-owned credit cards and Israel’s main credit card companies have admitted that 20,000 cards have been exposed.  Along the way, he has also attacked the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange and Bank Massad.  In an interesting and potentially scary turn of events, a group of Israeli hackers, IDF-Team, took down the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul) and the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) as a counter-attack.  Another Israeli hacker going by Hannibal claims to have 30 million Arab e-mail addresses, complete with passwords (including Facebook passwords), and says he’s received e-mails not only from potential victims but from officials in France and other countries asking him to stop.  This cyber-conflict is escalating.

In a very different type of breach, you’ve probably also seen the cruise ship laying on it’s side a mere 200 yards from the Italian shore.  While not necessarily a data security story, it is still a human security story that, so far, has been attributed to human error – like many data security breaches.  Like many data breach victims, people put their trust in another entity.  Their internal risk-analysis tells them that it is relatively safe and the probability of disaster is low.  But when people make bad decisions which seems the case in this situation, many others are put at greater risk.

Put on your virtual life vests, 2012 is gonna be a ride.

Cloud Security With FedRAMP

Want to provide Cloud services to the federal government?  Then you’ll have to adhere to almost 170 security controls under the recently announced Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program.  The program, set to go live in June, is designed to analyze/audit cloud computing providers for federal government agencies, expedite security clearances for cloud providers and foster the adoption of cloud computing by the Federal government.  FedRAMP is meant to provide a baseline for low to moderate risk systems and is based on the NIST cyber-security Special Publication 800-53 Revision 3.  FedRAMP provides an overall checklist for handling risks associated with Web services that would have a limited, or serious impact on government operations if disrupted.  Cloud providers must implement these security controls to be authorized to provide cloud services to federal agencies.  The government will forbid federal agencies from using a cloud service provider unless the vendor can prove that a FedRAMP-accredited third-party organization has verified and validated the security controls.  Once approved, the cloud vendor would not need to be ‘re-evaluated’ by every government entity that might be interested in their solution.  There may be instances where additional controls are added by agencies to address specific needs.

Independent, third-party auditors are tasked with testing each product/solution for compliance which is intended to save agencies from doing their own risk management assessment.  Details of the auditing process are expected early next month but includes a System Security Plan that clarifies how the requirements of each security control will be met within a cloud computing environment. Within the plan, each control must detail the solutions being deployed such as devices, documents and processes; the responsibilities of providers and government customer to implement the plan; the timing of implementation; and how solution satisfies controls. A Security Assessment Plan details how each control implementation will be assessed and tested to ensure it meets the requirements and the Security Assessment Report explains the issues, findings, and recommendations from the security control assessments detailed in the security assessment plan.  Ultimately, each provider must establish means of preventing unauthorized users from hacking the cloud service.

The regulations allow the contractor to determine which elements of the cloud must be backed up and how frequently. Three backups are required, one available online.  All government information stored on a provider's servers must be encrypted.  When the data is in transit, providers must use a "hardened or alarmed carrier protective distribution system," which detects intrusions, if not using encryption.  Since cloud services may span many geographic areas with various people in the mix, providers must develop measures to guard their operations against supply chain threats.  Also, vendors must disclose all the services they outsource and obtain the board's approval to contract out services in the future.

More details of the FedRAMP program will be available from the General Services Administration by February 8th, but they have already started accepting applications for third party assessment vendors.
