Hello Infiltrators - Our Doors are Wide Open

In the 1946 classic ‘Hair Raising Hare,’ Bugs Bunny asks, ‘Have you ever have the feeling you were being watched? Like the eyes of strange things are upon you?’ Like Bugs often did, he breaks the fourth wall and involves the audience directly, invoking a feeling that someone is looking over your shoulder.

Today, it is likely the case that you are being watched by the strange (internet of) things that are starting to infiltrate our homes, cars, bodies and the whole of society. While there is a mad rush by people purchasing these things and a similar rush for companies to develop applications and services around those, many are not pausing to either understand the risks or build security into the products.
From home security systems to surveillance cameras to baby monitors to televisions to thermostats, examples pour in daily about flaws and vulnerabilities that leave you, your family and your home exposed. The way things are going, even if you’ve closed and locked your front door physically, that door is wide open to the digital world.

Here are just a few recent examples.

Might as well start with our dwellings. Security researchers at Rapid7 found flaws in in Comcast’s Xfinity Home Security system that would cause it to falsely report that the home’s windows and doors are closed and secured even if they’ve been opened. It also failed to detect an intruder’s motion inside the house. Attacking the system’s communications protocol, they used radio jamming equipment to block the signals that pass from the door, window, or motion sensor to the home’s baseband hub. The system didn’t notice the communication was breached and essentially, failed open without any alert to the owner. When the jammers were turned off, it took minutes to hours for the sensors to reconnect and still didn’t give any indication that a catastrophe could have occurred.
Next, to some of the things inside the insecure house. Experts are predicting that as more connected, smart-TVs enter the home, this will be an avenue for the bad guys to breach your home network. Almost half of U.S. households already have a smart-TV and close to 70% of the sets sold this year will have connectivity capabilities. A threat researcher with Symantec was able to infect his new Andriod-based smart-tele with some ransomware. Within a few seconds, the TV was locked and unusable with the fear inducing pay-up-pop-up ransom note.

Also giving outsiders a view of the inside, Princeton researchers found that certain IoT thermostats were leaking customer zip codes over the internet in clear text. Fortunately, when the manufacturer was notified they quickly issued a patch. There are many horror stories about strangers watching and talking to children via insecure baby monitors. Add to that, toys that record your kid's conversations puts the whole family at risk.

And out on the road, we’ve seen how researchers were able to control a Jeep and last week, researchers were able to remotely control any of the Nissan Leaf’s functions by using the mobile app’s insecure APIs. The unsecured APIs allowed anyone who knows the VIN of a car to access non-critical features like climate control and battery charge management from anywhere on the Internet. Also, someone exploiting the unauthenticated APIs can see the car's estimated driving range. They too, pulled access to the app until they can properly secure the infrastructure and application that supports the mobile app.

Lastly, if you think this is contained within a consumer based household, think again. A recent Ponemon/Lookout survey revealed that an average of 1,700 malware laced mobile devices per company, connect to an enterprise network. Wait ‘til all the insecure wearables start connecting. Employees are often referred to as the weakest link. Today it is mostly their insecure mobile devices but multiply that by a wardrobe, now the risk is enhanced.

Internet of Things OWASP Top 10

The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) is focused on improving the security of software. Their mission is to make software security visible, so that individuals and organizations worldwide can make informed decisions about true software security risks and their OWASP Top 10 provides a list of the 10 Most Critical Security Risks. For each risk it provides a description, example vulnerabilities, example attacks, guidance on how to avoid and references to OWASP and other related resources. Many of you are familiar with their Top 10 Most Critical Web Application Security Risks. They provide the list for awareness and guidance on some of the critical web applications security areas to address. It is a great list and many security vendors point to it to show the types of attacks that can be mitigated.

Now the Internet of Things (IoT) has its own OWASP Top 10.

If you've lived under a rock for the past year, IoT or as I like to call it, the Internet of Nouns, is this era where everyday objects - refrigerators, toasters, thermostats, cars, sensors, etc - are connected to the internet and can send and receive data. There have been tons of articles covering IoT over the last 6 months or so, including some of my own.

The OWASP Internet of Things (IoT) Top 10 is a project designed to help vendors who are interested in making common appliances and gadgets network/Internet accessible. The project walks through the top ten security problems that are seen with IoT devices, and how to prevent them.

You can click on each to get a detailed view on the threat agents, attack vectors, security weaknesses, along with the technical and business impacts. They also list any privacy concerns along with example attack scenarios. Good stuff!

Will the Cloud Soak Your Fireworks?

This week in the States, the Nation celebrates it's Independence and many people will be attending or setting off their own fireworks show. In Hawaii, fireworks are shot off more during New Year's Eve than on July 4th and there is even Daytime Fireworks now.

Cloud computing is exploding like fireworks with all the Oooooooo's and Ahhhhhhh's of what it offers but the same groan, like the traffic jam home, might be coming to an office near you.

Recently, Ponemon Institute and cloud firm Netskope released a study Data Breach: The Cloud Multiplier Effect, indicating that 613 IT and security professionals felt that deploying resources in the cloud triples the probability of a major breach. Specifically, a data breach with 100,000+ customer records compromised, the cost would be just over $20 million, based on Ponemon Institute’s May 2014 'Cost of a Data Breach'. With a breach of that scale, using cloud services may triple the risk of a data breach. It's called the 'cloud multiplier effect' and it translates to a 3% higher risk of a data breach for every 1% increase in the use of cloud services. So if you had 100 cloud services, you would only need to add 25 more to increase the possibility of a data breach by 75%, according to the study.

69% of the respondents felt that their organizations are not proactive in assessing what data is too sensitive to be stored in the cloud and 62% said that the cloud services their companies are using are not fully tested to make sure they are secure. Most, almost three-quarters, believed they would not even be notified of a breach that involved lost or stolen intellectual property/business confidential or even customer data. Not a lot of confidence there. The security respondents felt around 45% of all software applications used by the company were cloud based yet half of those had no IT visibility.

This comes at a time when many organizations are looking to the cloud to solve a bunch of challenges. At the same time, this sounds a lot like the cloud concerns of year's past - security and risk - plus this is the perception of...not necessarily the reality of what's actually occurring. It very well could be the case - with all the parts, loss of control, out in the wild, etc - that the risk is greater.

And I think that's the point. The risk.

While cloud does offer organizations amazing opportunities, what these people are saying is that companies need to do a better job at the onset, in the beginning and during the evaluations, to understand the risk of the type(s) of data getting sent to the cloud along with the specific cloud service that holds it. It has only been a few years that the cloud has been taken seriously and from the beginning there have been grumblings about the security risks and loss of control. Some cloud providers have addressed many of those concerns and organizations are subscribing to services or building their own cloud infrastructure. It is where IT is going.

But still,as with any new technology bursting with light, color and noise, take good care where and when you light the fuse.

Is 2013 Half Empty or Half Full?

It certainly has been a wild ride thus far for 2013 as we head into the second half.  Breaches, hacks, exposures, leaks, along with things like BYOD and SDN should make the next 6 months interesting.  From the many headlines in 2012, you'd think organizations would be locked down tight but alas, intruders are still kicking a$$ and taking names...literally.

Media and news organizations, like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, experienced data breaches due to spear fishing and malware.  According to various news articles, certain journalists were targeted based on their story coverage but more interesting to me is the fact that the anti-virus along with the IPS/IDS in place failed to catch the malware.  Unless there is a signature in place for a known piece of evil code, that demon will make it's way through.

Financial institutions up to and including the Federal Reserve were breached.  While many bank hacks are driven by monetary gain, sometimes they are the targets of political activists.  Humans are very passionate about their beliefs and like to express those feelings.  There have always been protesters and activists - some write letters, some picket on the sidewalk, some throw rocks and with the advent of the internet, now you can protest by creating digital havoc.  Instead of hoping that people boycott a particular entity, you can simply take it out yourself so no one can get to the site. 

Social media networks continue to feel the heat from breaches.  Many social media sites are now deploying two-factor authentication to help reduce password exposures and increase verification checks.  Many news stories have talked about password usage and it's good that two factor is being deployed...but,in many cases, it is only after the bad news hits the media.  Why wait?

To help organizations understand the various web threats, OWASP has released their Top 10 for 2013 (with changes from 2010 Edition):

  • A1 Injection
  • A2 Broken Authentication and Session Management (was formerly 2010-A3)
  • A3 Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) (was formerly 2010-A2)
  • A4 Insecure Direct Object References
  • A5 Security Misconfiguration (was formerly 2010-A6)
  • A6 Sensitive Data Exposure (2010-A7 Insecure Cryptographic Storage and 2010-A9 Insufficient Transport Layer Protection were merged to form 2013-A6)
  • A7 Missing Function Level Access Control (renamed/broadened from 2010-A8 Failure to Restrict URL Access)
  • A8 Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) (was formerly 2010-A5)
  • A9 Using Components with Known Vulnerabilities (new but was part of 2010-A6 – Security Misconfiguration)
  • A10 Unvalidated Redirects and Forwards

These are guides to help organizations understand the threats but always make sure you understand you own risks and focus on mitigating those first whether they are on the OWASP Top 10 or not.  Then make sure you're covered on the rest.

So far, 2013 has been full of breaches that empties an organization's information.

BYOD Policies – More than an IT Issue Part 1: Liability

#BYOD or Bring Your Own Device has moved from trend to an permanent fixture in today's corporate IT infrastructure. It is not strictly an IT issue however. Many groups within an organization need to be involved as they grapple with the risk of mixing personal devices with sensitive information.  In my opinion, BYOD follows the classic Freedom vs. Control dilemma. The freedom for user to choose and use their desired device of choice verses an organization's responsibility to protect and control access to sensitive resources. While not having all the answers, this mini-series tries to ask many the questions that any organization needs to answer before embarking on a BYOD journey.

Enterprises should plan for rather than inherit BYOD. BYOD policies must span the entire organization but serve two purposes - IT and the end users. The policy must serve IT to secure the corporate data and minimize the cost of implementation and enforcement. At the same time, the policy must serve the employees to preserve the native user experience, keep pace with innovation and respect the user's privacy.  A sustainable policy should include a clear BOYD plan to employees including standards on the acceptable types and mobile operating systems along with a support policy showing the process of how the device is managed and operated.

Some key policy issue areas include: Liability, Device choice, Economics, User Experience & Privacy and a trust Model.  Today we look at Liability.

Liability

In addition to IT, an organization's Legal department needs to be involved with any BYOD policy creation to make sure the liability risk for both the user and company is contained and managed. While employees are an organization's greatest asset (other than Intellectual Property, potentially), they are often the culprits of data exposure, intentional or not. Organizations need to consider employee actions and the corresponding liability. If the employee owns the device, does the liability increase or decrease? Even if liability stays neutral, the overall business risk increases any time corporate data is accessed from personal employee devices, mobile or not.

What happens if personal data on a personal Smartphone is damaged? What happens if it's remotely wiped by corporate IT, if it is lost? These are some areas that must be resolved with the BYOD policy. Some organizations are very clear about lost/stolen policy and users have the choice of opting out. That's just the personal liability.

From a financial liability standpoint, what happens when monthly charges are reimbursed? Often, financial responsibility may dictate legal obligation.

A recent Ponemon Institute and Websense survey showed that mobile devices can be a double-edge sword for enterprises.  77% of the 4640 responses said that the use of mobile devices in the workplace is important to achieving business objectives but almost the same percentage - 76% -  believe that these tools introduce a "serious" set of risks.  While organizations understand the risks, the survey showed that only 39% have security controls in place to mitigate them.  As a result, 59% of respondents said they’ve seen a jump in malware infections over the past 12 months due, specifically, to insecure mobile devices including laptops, Smartphone, and tablets while 51% said their organization has experienced a data breach due to insecure devices.

As part of the BYOD Policy the Liability Checklist, while not inclusive, should:

· Define baseline security requirements

· Assess liability of personal web and app usage

· Evaluate legal ramifications of reimbursement

· Quantify the costs of monitoring and enforcement

· Assess the risk and liability of damaging personal data

There are probably a ton more Liability questions that should be answered but this was intended as a starting point.  What other areas should legal be concerned about?

    SmartTV, Smartphones and Fill-in-the-Blank Employees

    Right off the bat, I know the title sounds like it’s all connected but they are only slightly related so I’ll give you the option of dropping out now.  Still here?  Cool.  I’ve been traveling over the last couple weeks and stories catch my eye along the way that I probably would’ve written about but didn’t.  Until now.  Besides it’s always fun to roll up a few stories in one to get back on track. 

    TV’s are becoming cutting edge multimedia devices that reside on your living room wall.  You can stream movies, browse the web, check weather, plug in USBs for slideshows/video, play games, home network along with simply catching the latest episode of your favorite program.  This article from usatoday.com talks about many of the internet enabled TVs and their capabilities.  For instance, some TVs are now including dual-core processors to make web browsing more enjoyable since many TVs don’t have the processing power to load web pages quickly, or at least what we’re used to on our computers.  Also coming out are TVs with screen resolutions four times greater than full HD screens – these are the 4K sets.  These new 4K sets apparently has dampened any lingering 3D enthusiasm, which seems waning anyway.  In addition to TVs, other appliances are getting smart, so they say.  There are new refrigerators, air conditioners, washers, and dryers which are all app-controlled.  Users can turn them on and off from anywhere.  I know there are mobile ‘apps’ but it would be a easy transition to start calling our appliances, apps also.  Close enough.  How’s the clothes cleaning app working?  Is the food cooling app running?  I’ve mentioned many times that while all this is very cool stuff, we still need to remember that these devices are connected to the internet and subject to the same threats as all our other connected devices.  It’s only a matter of time when a hacker takes down all the ‘smart’ refrigerators on the East Coast.  I also think that TVs, cars and any other connected device could be considered BYOD in the near future.  Why wouldn’t a mobile employee want secure VDI access from his car’s Ent/GPS display?  Why couldn’t someone check their corporate email from the TV during commercials?

    Smartphones, as most of you are aware, are changing our lives.  Duh.  There is an interesting series over on cnn.com called, "Our Mobile Society," about how smartphones and tablets have changed the way we live.  The first two articles, How smartphones make us superhuman and On second thought: Maybe smartphones make us 'SuperStupid'? cover both sides of the societal dilemma.  In 2011, there were 6 Billion mobile phone subscriptions worldwide servicing the 7 Billion people who live on this planet, according to the International Telecommunication Union.  These connected devices have made trivia, trivial and we can keep in constant contact with everyone along with people driving, texting and generally not paying attention to anything around them while interacting with their appendage.  Pew also released a survey indicating that 54% of cell phone consumers who use mobile apps have decided not to install an app after learning how much personal information they'd have to share; and 30% of that group has uninstalled an app for privacy reasons.  We are so concerned about our privacy that we’re now dumping apps that ask for too much info.  I know there is a ‘We all have one & use it everyday day but don’t look, ok’ joke somewhere in there.

    To Educate or Not Educate.  I have no idea why I only saw this recently but back in July, there was a lively discussion about whether security awareness training for employees was money well spent.   I’ve often written about the importance of ongoing training.  In Why you shouldn't train employees for security awareness, Dave Aitel argues that even with all that  training, employees still click malicious links anyway.  Instead of wasting money on employee training, organizations should bolster up their system’s defenses to protect employees from themselves.  Boris Sverdlik of Jaded Security posted a rebuttal saying that employees are and should be accountable for what happens in the environment and no amount of controls can protect against people spilling secrets during a social engineering probe.  In a rebuttal to both, Iftach Ian Amit, from Security Art says they are both right and wrong at the same time.  He states, ‘Trying to solve infosec issues through technological means is a guaranteed recipe for failure. No one, no technology, or software can account for every threat scenario possible, and this is exactly why we layer our defenses. And layering shouldn’t just be done from a network or software perspective – security layers also include access control, monitoring, tracking, analysis, and yes – human awareness. Without the human factor you are doomed.’  His position is that when it comes to ‘Information Security,’ we focus too much on the ‘information’ part and less on the holistic meaning of ‘security.’  His suggestion is to look at your organization as an attacker would and invest in areas that are vulnerable.  That’s your basic risk analysis and risk mitigation.
